In the Training Area, maybe you could allow me to fight my robots against eachother (since in the Rankings area I'm only allowed to fight against robots that aren't mine). Then I could write my own "duck".

Okay, as long as I don't get banned due to auto-scripting my fights. Right now, the only way to climb the leaderboard, even if you have the best AI in the world, is to fight the #1 guy about ten thousand times. The proposed ELO rating system might go some way toward fixing this issue anyway...

Another idea might be to provide random (destructable?) cover, and methods for detecting cover. Would be interesting to code an AI that can take advantage of walls, either for ambush or defense.

Yet another idea could be different game types, a-la Team Fortress. Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, etc, could all fit very well into this type of game / toy.

There is no need to bake this in, as it can be implemented using the existing platform. The more functionality you bake into the API, the less is left to evaluate the skills of the actual developer. If you're going to implement this, I suggest making it a sub-optimal implementation, to leave room and incentive for devs to code a better solution.

I'm curious how this could be fixed without breaking backward compatibility.
