Every now and then, plop a power-up on the field. This can be something that takes effect automatically (such as more powerful ammo, or faster tank speed), something that needs to be coded for (such as an additional cloneAvailable), or something that really screws with the game world (such as swapping "left" and "right" directions, giving both tanks multiple guns, or making the game world 3D instead of 2D).
That’s a great idea. We’ll just have to think about doing it in a way that does not unbalance things.

Another idea might be to provide random (destructable?) cover, and methods for detecting cover. Would be interesting to code an AI that can take advantage of walls, either for ambush or defense.
Yet another idea could be different game types, a-la Team Fortress. Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, etc, could all fit very well into this type of game / toy.
